Nolan Arenado, Luis Perdomo and 2 others suspended for Rockies-Padres brawl

Major League Baseball has (finally) finished handing down discipline from its wild day of brawls Wednesday. As part of the fallout from the San Diego Padres and Colorado Rockies ruckus, four players have been suspended by MLB, including Rockies star Nolan Arenado who was the centerpiece of Wednesday’s incident.

Arenado was suspended five games by MLB after charging the mound and throwing punches. He’ll most likely appeal the decision and, under MLB rules, is allowed to play until his suspension is heard. Padres pitcher Luis Perdomo, who threw at Arenado, received 5 games as well. Both players are also receiving undisclosed fines.

The suspensions don’t stop wth Arenado and Perodomo. Rockies outfielder Gerardo Parra has received a four-game suspension, and Padres pitcher Buddy Baumann has been dealt a one-game suspension. Both have also received undisclosed fines. And beyond the suspensions, three players are being fined for their actions during the brawl: A.J. Ellis and Freddy Galvis of the Padres, and German Marquez of the Rockies.

The brawl was the culmination of bad blood between the two teams that had drawn out over two days: The Rockies hit and injured Padres outfield Manuel Margot on Tuesday night. The Padres hit Trevor Story earlier in the game Wednesday, then the Rockies hit Hunter Renfroe. When Arenado was hit by Perdomo, everything exploded.

Arenado, who is a perennial MVP candidate, immediately charged Perdomo. Perdomo threw his glove at Arenado and backed off as Arenado chased after him like a pass rusher chasing a quarterback. In all, five players were ejected from the game.

The Rockies-Padres brawl proved to be the undercard for Wednesday night’s Yankees-Red Sox brawl, which happened when Joe Kelly hit Tyler Austin. Both Kelly and Austin received their suspensions on Thursday, and both players are appealing.
