Nicki Minaj and Adele Are Collaborating on a New Song

Update: Nicki Minaj has taken to Twitter to tell fans she was joking about the collab. “I thought everyone could clearly see I was being sarcastic,” she wrote. “Now I have to go to Adele’s studio & steal some files.”

Original post: Despite announcing that she was retiring back in September, rapper Nicki Minaj has announced that she will be releasing a brand new song—and with an unexpected collaborator too: Adele.

In a new interview with Entertainment Tonight, Minaj was asked if she is working on something with the “Hello” singer, who hasn’t released new material since her 2015 album, 25. The rapper excitedly replied, “Yes and yes, yes and yes, woo hoo!” She added, “But Adele made me swear to secrecy that I’m not allowed to tell anyone that I’m working with her. And that we already shot a video. And it’s an epic song!” (Guess she can’t keep a secret.)

No other details are known about the song or when it will come out, but the upcoming match-up makes perfect sense: Adele has proven herself to be a Nicki Minaj fan before. On her 2016 episode of James Corden’s Carpool Karaoke, for instance, the singer flawlessly rapped Minaj’s verse on Kanye West’s song “Monster.” (Her delivery of “Hairdresser from Milan that’s the monster ’do / Monster Giuseppe heel, that’s the monster shoe” is flawless.) She also busted out the rap again at an event earlier this year, which partygoers happily filmed. Can we expect the pair to rap on this new track? Only time will tell.

Fans are clearly starved for new Adele music—they even got their hopes up last month when rumors ignited that Adele was collaborating with Beyoncé and OneRepublic on a new track, though that tidbit proved to be fake news. Fans also let their imaginations run wild when Lady Gaga announced she would be calling her next album “Adele,” but of course, that could mean absolutely anything—not just a potential collaboration between the two singers. In any case, this new song must be real—and good—if Minaj is pulling herself out of retirement for it; back in September, Minaj took to Twitter to announce her break from music. “I’ve decided to retire & have my family,” she wrote, following it up with a snappy rap verse: “I know you guys are happy now. To my fans, keep reppin me, do it til da death of me, in the box—cuz ain’t nobody checkin me. Love you for LIFE.”
