Nickelodeon Is Developing Spongebob Squarepants Spin-Offs

I’m ready, I’m ready, I’m ready.

Fresh off a recent appearance at the Super Bowl, and Spongebob Squarepants could already be headed back to your television, and soon. Ahead of Spongebob's 20th birthday, Nickelodeon has announced it plans to create reported spin-off series based around central characters that reside in the Bikini Bottoms animated universe.

In news announced by Variety, Brian Robbins, Nickelodeon president, confirmed that new chapters in the Spongebob saga were coming. He even theorized of possible storylines, saying they could “tell an original story about SpongeBob and Patrick, or maybe tell a Sandy Cheeks stand-alone story, or can Plankton have his own?” He added, "I think the fans are clamoring for it.”

There's no word on when the new Spongebob-inspired offerings might officially air, but as Deadline notes, the series will debut a 20th anniversary live-action and animation special in July.

News of the potential spin-offs arrive just as the network announced it intended to revive All That. The once popular comedy sketch series helped to jumpstart the careers of stars like Jamie Lynn Spears and Kenan Thompson, premiering in 1994. There's also no word on a potential release date for the reboot, but the network did confirm that Kenan would serve as executive producer and that some original cast members would likely be making an appearance.

Spongebob Squarepants has remained a staple of pop culture, with fans previously working to have the characters included in the recent Super Bowl. The creator of the series, Stephen Hillenburg, passed away in November, and many animators and fans had remarked on the show's lasting impact. Most recently, the animated character appeared on numerous posters during March for Our Lives and was turned into a Broadway musical.
