How Nick Jonas Turned the Craziest Year of His Life Into a Fragrance

Slowly but surely, Nick Jonas is carving out a fragrance empire. Last year, he partnered with John Varvatos on JVxNJ, a fragrance built on the men's shared love of travel and exploration. Now, the duo has paired up for another scent — and everything they've each experienced over the past year has gone into it.

"We're in probably the craziest year of our lives, both together in the work we're doing and separately," Jonas tells Allure. That's a big understatement. In December, Jonas married Priyanka Chopra in a multi-continent-spanning ceremony that every magazine, including this one, couldn't help but cover. He's released new music, reunited professionally with his brothers Joe and Kevin, and is in the midst of an international tour. Jonas's craziness is A-list craziness. But he rightly thinks the rest of us can relate to it, too.

"Men these days are balancing a lot and always on the go," he says. "We wanted to have this feel like a little bit of a disconnect, a little fearless, but it also should give you energy. We tried to bottle that up in this thing." This thing became JVxNJ Silver Eau de Toilette ($74), a fragrance with a description that contains the words "momentum," "vivifying," and "electric."

That intense energy comes courtesy of a mix of earthy and citrus notes, like Italian lemon, green leaves, and chromatic sage. Plus, since this is Nick Jonas, there's a base note of "sexy amber."

Jonas and Varvatos bring their own masculinity to fragrance, but both support the more inclusive notion that fragrance has no gender. "We just think of scents that we love and want to wear," says Varvatos. "It transcends across gender. I think the world is much more open to that today."

For Jonas, fragrance, like music, is just a way to get people to feel confident and express their creativity. "I'm meeting people who wear our fragrances and talk about how much they love them and how confident they feel, which is certainly the goal. I aim to build something that becomes part of the fabric of people's lives, just like how a favorite song is can make you feel really confident and give you energy."
