Maple Leafs sign depth forward Nicolas Aube-Kubel to one-year deal

Nicolas Aube-Kubel is a Toronto Maple Leaf.

The organization announced in the first half hour of NHL free agency that they have signed the depth forward, who famously dented the Stanley Cup during the Colorado Avalanche's Stanley Cup celebration, to a one-year contract worth $1 million.

Aube-Kubel, 26, is a strong skater and forechecker with a reasonably strong level of versatility. He could conceivably fill a variety of roles for the Maple Leafs, who are looking to fill a number of vacancies at forward this offseason, but will most likely be slotted onto the fourth line.

After beginning last season with the Philadelphia Flyers, Aube-Kubel did most of his best work with the Avalanche. He registered 11 goals and 22 points in 67 games with the Stanley Cup champs, but did not register a single point in 14 postseason games. He appeared in just four games in the Western Conference final and Stanley Cup Final combined.

Aube-Kubel was originally a second-round selection of the Flyers in 2014.
