The cold moon is named by the Mohawk, an Iroquoian-speaking Native American tribe, due to its occurrence when the winter cold sets in, according to Almanac.

The December full moon goes by many other names, including the “long nights moon” and the “moon before Yule,” respectively named after the winter solstice and Yule, an ancient winter festival, according to TimeandDate.com.

During the full moon on Dec. 26, the path the moon traces through the night sky will be an outline similar to Santa’s sleigh. On this day, the moon will be above the horizon longer than any moon, according to Almanac.

Although the moon is the star of the show, there are other solar sights to look out for if you plan on stargazing after Christmas.

Three planets will be visible to the naked eye on the night of the full moon, including Saturn to the south-southwest until it sets at 9:18 p.m.; Jupiter to the southeast until it sets at 2:37 a.m.; and Venus, from 4:14 a.m. until sunrise at 7:19 a.m., according to Space.

A variety of constellations will be visible around the full moon, too. The moon rises in Gemini, one of the bright constellations that marks the winter, and will be surrounded by Auriga, Orion and Taurus. Castor and Pollux will be visible soon after moonrise, at 6:30 p.m.

Alnitak, Alnilam, Mintaka, Capella and Auriga are stars that will be visible on Dec. 26, along with Betelgeuse and Aldebaran, stars recognizable by their reddish hues, according to Space.
