There are a lot of cool things out there that make us wonder — do they really work? In our I Tried It series, we set out to use them in the real world and have determined that, in fact, they really do.

On Trial: Jetson Probiotic Subscription

Tester: Brian Murray, admirer of all things healthy

The Brief: If you don’t already take a daily probiotic in some form (e.g. yogurt, drinks, etc.) you probably know someone who does. The only problem is, foods and drinks claiming to contain lots of probiotics can involve loads of sugar, and are kind of expensive.

I was one of those people wasting my money on my favorite bottle of kombucha. Not only was it around $5 per day, I wasn't thinking of the amount of extra sugar I was taking in because I just knew "it was good for me.”

And before we explain Jetson, let's first break down probiotics. Probiotics are actual living microorganisms that can provide a wide variety of health benefits for your body. They line your digestive track and make sure your body can absorb all the good nutrients while fighting off illnesses in your gut. A healthy gut is a healthy body. Your gut controls your inflammation, brain health, weight, mood, and more.

And no, eating yogurt will not get you all the probiotics you need! (Blame that misconception on Elie Metchnikoff, a biologist who won a Nobel Prize in 1908 for discovering that the bacteria fermented in yogurt was actually good for you.) Recent studies, though, show that you’ll have to eat a hell of a lot of yogurt — 25 servings' worth — to get the benefits of those proBs.

The better solution: Jetson. When I discovered it, I was hesitant, TBH. Items in pill form make me nervous. I don't like taking pills if I'm not 100% sure about what's in them or what they're doing to my body. But after a little research, I said "so long" to my daily Synergy.

Jetson is a seasonal probiotic that's delivered right to you, fresh, every month. The pill bottle practically has no shelf life, as it’s prepared less than 2 weeks prior to landing on your doorstep. Jetson uses the same strains named in scientific studies, with no added junk.

The coolest part is the guy who invented it, Stefan Weitz. A former Microsoft executive, Weitz just happens to also be one of the founding members of Bing search engine. NBD. He was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis more than a decade ago and was spending thousands of dollars on pain pills and other drugs to help treat it. Not wanting to take 2,000 milligrams of painkillers per day, he came up with a a better solution.

The Jetson Probiotic Subscription works as follows: The first month, you’ll get two bottles: the current seasonal probiotic and Gut Prep. The Gut Prep is a recommended first step to clean out your system and help stimulate the growth of beneficial bacteria in your gut. After the first 30 days, you’ll only get the seasonal proB. Every 3 months, the strains change to adapt to the changes in the environment.

The different strains — Fit, Mood, Immunity, and Outside — that come during each quarter of the year help optimize your well-being.

The Fit blend during the summer months reduces bloating and enhances energy to keep your gut healthy during the most physically exhausting season. During the fall, the Mood blend helps develop a positive mental state for the shorter days, and aids during seasonal depression. Immunity is for the winter months and has added immunity strains to fight bad bugs and improve respiratory health. During the spring, the Outside blend combats heavy pollen and revitalizes your system for more days spent outside.

Closing Argument: I can't rave enough about how easy it is to pop the little pill in my mouth every morning and know I don't need to worry about getting my probiotics. For $35 a month, I'm spending less than $2 per day and getting more benefits than Chobani or Health-Ade could give me in 24 hours.
