If you love hot yoga, there’s a new a place in Singapore where you can break a sweat and improve flexibility sans the stuffiness of a heated room.

At Jal Yoga, the newly-opened studio at 911 Alexandra Road offers Infrared Heat Yoga, which allows participants to perform the exercise underneath infrared panels.

According to founders Pardeep Fogat, 30, and Jasmine Loh, 49, it is the same technology used by many dermatologists and physiologists, who use them to improve skin’s radiance and relieve muscle pain, respectively. Other benefits of infrared include a reduction in cellulite and better sleep, they said.

The spacious rooms at Jal Yoga, which is located on the ground floor and measures 5,500 square feet, have good air ventilation as the windows are normally opened slightly.

“There’s no forced air and you can breathe easily when you do infrared heat yoga,” said Pardeep, who picked the location, situated across from the Alexandra Retail Centre, because he feels that the area is deprived of yoga activities.

Besides Infrared Heat Yoga, Jal Yoga offers other unique exercises not available at mainstream studios such as Upa Yoga and Angamardana Series. The former focuses on the lubrication of the joints while the latter focuses on building physical strength to prepare the body for several yoga poses.

Other types of yoga available are hatha, aerial, vinyasa, kundalini, anusara elements, ashtanga, kinetic, as well as kid’s and laughing yoga.

Memberships are available on an annual and bi-annual basis, and members are allowed to drop by the facility to practise yoga on their own.

Jal Yoga also offers barre workouts and pilates, and is currently awaiting approval to provide Ayurveda treatments.

“Yoga is more like a cardio workout in Singapore when it should include both the mind and the body,” said Pardeep, who hopes to offer a holistic venue for people to improve their health.

Born in India, Pardeep was introduced to yoga 10 years ago when he was overweight and had difficulties breathing. He moved to Singapore three years ago and taught Loh yoga.

Loh is a former professional from the pharmaceutical industry who decided to quit her full-time job four months ago to focus on her new business venture.

“I used to run a lot but that has taken a toll on my knees and I’ve taken up yoga ever since,” said the 49-year-old, who looks youthful and energetic, all thanks to yoga.
