There are a lot of cool things out there that make us wonder — do they really work? In our I Tried It series, we set out to use them in the real world and have determined that, in fact, they really do.

On trial: Revival Rugs, a thoughtfully curated, ethically sourced online marketplace of beautiful handmade rugs, textiles, and home decor

The tester: Danielle St. Pierre, lover of vintage rugs; hater of schlepping them home

The brief: I had been on the hunt for the perfect vintage rug for my living room for the longest time. Growing up with a mom who basically had a side hustle of finding the coolest vintage rugs imaginable, it's fair to say that I was taught to be selective. But after living in New York for nearly 10 years, I've had to temper my expectations and instead embrace convenience, settling on subpar rugs that were affordable, prone to the occasional wine spill, and deliverable to my apartment.

So, when a chic, thoughtfully sourced online marketplace for both vintage and new rugs called Revival Rugs popped up on my radar, I just had to know more.

In a nutshell, Revival Rugs offers a vast online marketplace of beautiful rugs, both vintage and new, in addition to an extensive selection of home textiles. You can shop one-of-a-kind vintage rugs that are globally sourced from countries like Turkey or Morocco, and you can also browse a vast selection of Revival-made rugs in brand-new condition.

From hand-knotted shag rugs to Turkish works of art, there is something for everyone. If you're like me, you might get lost in the subcategories of gorgeous rare and vintage rugs, but I love that you can drill down your search by rug style, size, color, or rugs by room.

In the words of Ben Hyman, cofounder and CEO of Revival Rugs:

“We started Revival because everywhere we looked for a rug — whether in person or online — there was a general lack of transparency, unreasonable prices, and poor-quality machine-made replicas,” he said. “Oriental rugs, in particular, have remained beset by high prices and cloaked in mystery.”

Hyman added: "There is ambiguity in how much rugs should cost and what constitutes quality, and a lack of education among customers. As a result, people often overpay at traditional luxury retailers or settle for copies of the real thing: machine-made or poorly constructed handmade rugs from big-box stores, which lack history and are filled with production compromises. We thought we could do better."

In case you're concerned about how Revival cleans and treats their vintage rugs, rest assured that the brand takes extensive, careful steps to ensure impeccable quality. All of the vintage rugs go through an extensive selection, preparation, and cleaning process to ensure that the quality is what you'd expect. Given the handmade nature of the rugs, there may be some imperfections, but that's part of the beauty of buying a rug with a special backstory. More about Revival's selection, preparation, and cleaning process can be found in their FAQ section under Vintage Rugs.

Simply put, Revival does do it better. I was lucky enough to snag a vintage 3x5 ruby red Turkish rug from their arsenal, and I can honestly say this instantly became a whole vibe in my living room. It's perfectly worn-in, it has a cool backstory, and the best part is that I didn't have to ever leave the comfort of my own apartment to find it. It arrived compactly folded and in impeccable condition, and I couldn't be happier to provide a new home for her.

In terms of pricing, Revival offers a fair range with an impressive variety. Their smallest vintage area rugs start at around $112, with most 3x5 picks averaging around $300. Revival-made new rugs start at $79. Be sure to measure your living space before deciding on a pick, and then leave it up to Revival for the rest.

Closing Argument: A good area rug is one of those little details that sets the tone of an entire room. Instead of opting for a mass-market area rug that simply fills the floor space, check out Revival's ethically sourced, special online rug marketplace. You'll find a gem.
