The Netflix Rebecca Adaptation: Everything We Know So Far
The Netflix Rebecca adaptation is coming this fall, and by the looks of the newly released trailer— starring Lily James and Armie Hammer—it's going to be a spectacular ride.
If you need a refresher, Rebecca, the 1938 gothic romantic thriller by Daphne du Maurier, tells the story of a young newlywed who lives in the shadow of her husband’s first wife, Rebecca.
In 1940 the book was adapted for the big screen, starring Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine and directed by Alfred Hitchcock. Now, some 80 years later, Netflix’s Rebecca adaptation will star James and Hammer in the lead roles, with Working Title Films (The Theory of Everything; Bridget Jones’s Diary; Love, Actually) producing. In other words, the October 21 premiere date can’t come soon enough.
On September 8, Netflix released the trailer, which features stunning locations and a very chilling Kristin Scott Thomas as the sinister housekeeper on the Manderley estate. Watch:
Earlier this summer, Netflix released gorgeous photos from the filming of Rebecca. That, and everything else we know, below:
When does the movie come out?
Netflix will release the film Wednesday, October 21, 2020.
Who’s starring in it?
Lily James (Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again, Cinderella) stars as newlywed Mrs. de Winter, while Armie Hammer (Call Me by Your Name, On the Basis of Sex) plays her husband, Maxim de Winter. Kristin Scott Thomas (Four Weddings and a Funeral, The English Patient) plays Mrs. Danvers, the menacing housekeeper at the sprawling Manderley estate where the de Winters live. The film also stars Keeley Hawes, Ann Dowd, Sam Riley, Tom Goodman-Hill, Mark Lewis Jones, John Hollingworth, and Bill Paterson.
Rebecca is directed by Ben Wheatley (Free Fire with Brie Larson, Kill List, A Field in England) and written by Jane Goldman, Joe Shrapnel, and Anna Waterhouse. The film is based on the 1938 novel by English playwright Daphne du Maurier.
Remind me: What’s the story about?
Per Netflix, “After a whirlwind romance in Monte Carlo with handsome widower Maxim de Winter, a newly married young woman arrives at Manderley, her new husband’s imposing family estate on a windswept English coast. Naive and inexperienced, she begins to settle into the trappings of her new life, but finds herself battling the shadow of Maxim’s first wife, the elegant and urbane Rebecca, whose haunting legacy is kept alive by sinister housekeeper Mrs. Danvers.”
