Netflix has revealed the first teaser trailer for The Pale Blue Eye, an American horror mystery film set in the United States Military Academy, West Point in 1830. Starring in the film is Christian Bale as former detective August Landor who was enlisted to investigate the gruesome murder of a cadet. To help him with the case, Landor partners with a young Edgar Allan Poe (Harry Melling), who grows up to become one of America's most renowned short-story writers and poets.

The film is based on Louis Bayard's novel published in 2007 and is directed by Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart) with Bale also serving as producer. The Pale Blue Eye marks a reunion for Cooper and Bale who have already worked together on two movies. Also starring in the film are Lucy Boynton, Gillian Anderson, and Robert Duvall.

"I thought, ‘OK, I have an opportunity to do three things with this film: Fashion a whodunnit, a father and son love story, and then a Poe origin story," Cooper said in an interview with Vanity Fair. "Poe at this young age was quite warm and witty and humorous and very Southernly. The experiences that I’m putting forth in this film led him down the darker paths that we have come to know him for."

Take a look at the trailer above and expect The Pale Blue Eye to premiere in theaters on December 23 and stream January 6 on Netflix.
