Netflix to Adapt C.S. Lewis's Beloved Chronicles of Narnia Series
C.S. Lewis's iconic world of Narnia is returning to the small screen. Netflix recently hired Coco co-writer Matthew Aldrich to head up its overarching live-action adaptation of the much-beloved Chronicles of Narnia book series. Here's what we know so far.
The adaptation will include both films and "series," which we're taking to mean episodic stories akin to a traditional television show.
Per Netflix, "Aldrich will work across both series and film and serve as a creative architect on all projects under the deal." What's unclear at this point is if these adaptations will follow the books faithfully, as Netflix has said it will "develop stories from across the Narnia universe."
For those unfamiliar, the Chronicles of Narnia series consists of seven fantasy novels which were originally published in the 1950s.
Most, but not all of Lewis's stories center around the four children of the Pevensie family during World War II, and the magical world of Narnia, which they discover after being evacuated from London. The most famous book of the series is, of course, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, which is a not-so-subtle Christian allegory.
This is hardly the first time Lewis's stories have been adapted.
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe has been adapted for television multiple times, and several other books have made it to the small screen as well. Lewis's books have also been turned into radio programs and stage productions. But perhaps the most famous adaptation of his works is a pair of films about the Pevensie children, which were produced by Disney in the mid-2000s.
