Over the weekend, legendary singer-songwriter Neil Diamond brightened everyone’s spirits with his new take on the iconic song “Sweet Caroline.”

Amid the coronavirus outbreak, the 79-year-old shared an updated version of his 1969 hit single with his acoustic guitar in hand and his dog nearby. Switching up the third verse of the fan-favorite tune, Neil encouraged everyone to wash their hands and practice social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic—both approved recommendations by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“I know we’re going through a rough time right now,” he said, introducing the video above. “But I love you, and I think maybe if we sing together, well, we’ll just feel a little bit better. Give it a try, okay?”

Wearing a cozy outfit in front of his fireplace, Neil began singing “Sweet Caroline,” but longtime fans immediately noticed that the classic line, “Hands, touchin’ hands / Reachin’ out, touchin’ me, touchin’ you” sounded a little different. Instead, the New York native opted for more fitting lyrics: “Hands, washing hands / Reaching out, don’t touch me, I won’t touch you.”

And, of course, fans couldn’t get enough of it. “Thank you Neil for being a national treasure, and being the breath of fresh air we need in these trying times,” one person tweeted. “Love you Neil! ❤️,” another added on Instagram. “There’s still hope wherever there’s a sense of humor,” a different fan wrote on YouTube.

So, if you’re in need of a song to wash your hands to for 20 seconds, you’ll want to consider this new take on an oldie but goodie.
