NBA to bring Mexico City team into G League as independent squad

The NBA is officially getting a team in Mexico.

League commissioner Adam Silver announced Thursday that the Capitanes, a team in Mexico’s top professional league, will join the G League as the first affiliated team outside the United States and Canada. The team is planned to make its G League debut in the 2020-21 season.

The Capitanes will be the G League’s lone team with no NBA affiliation, and the 29th team in the league. The Portland Trail Blazers and Denver Nuggets remain the lone teams without a G League affiliate.

“Bringing an NBA G League team to Mexico City is a historic milestone for the NBA which demonstrates our commitment to basketball fans in Mexico and across Latin America,” Silver said in a release. “As the first G League franchise based outside of the U.S. and Canada, we look forward to welcoming Capitanes to the NBA family.”

Established in 2016, the Capitanes have an agreement to play in the league for five years.

Silver made an announcement before the Dallas Mavericks and Detroit Pistons squared off in Mexico City on Thursday
