Naya Rivera’s Family Broke Their Silence and Paid Tribute to the “Beautiful Legend”
Naya Rivera went missing on July 8, 2020, during a boat ride and was found days later in Lake Piru.
Naya was able to save her 4-year-old son, Josey, before she drowned.
The actress’s family released a statement amid news of her death and asked for privacy during this time.
On the seventh anniversary of Cory Monteith’s death, authorities found Naya Rivera’s body in California’s Lake Piru nearly a week after she went missing during a boat ride. According to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department, Naya’s 4-year-old son, Josey Dorsey, recalled her saving him before she disappeared under the surface of the water. There were no signs of foul play.
Amid the news of her death, Naya’s Glee costars have taken to social media to share their condolences, love, and admiration for the late actress. Although her family was working with authorities to locate her, Naya’s family understandably remained silent amid the search. They recently broke their silence in a statement to Deadline.
They said:
“We are so grateful for the outpouring of love and prayers for Naya, Josey, and our family over the past week. While we grieve the loss of our beautiful legend, we are blessed to honor her everlasting legacy and magnetic spirit. Naya was an amazing talent but was an even greater person, mother, daughter, and sister.
“Thank you to the men and women of the Ventura, Tulare, and San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Departments for your commitment and unwavering effort to find Naya. We extend endless gratitude and ovation to the heroine who found her. Thank you to her friends, colleagues, and fans for your continuous support.
“Heaven gained our sassy angel. We kindly request that our privacy be respected during this very difficult time.”

Naya is survived by her son, her parents (Yolanda and George Rivera), her brother (Mychal Rivera), and her sister (Nickayla Rivera).
