Glee and Step Up: High Water star Naya Rivera was reported missing and later found dead, after going boating with her 4-year-old son Josey Hollis Dorsey. Here's everything you need to know about the heartbreaking situation.

What happened to Naya Rivera?

According to local officials, 33-year-old Naya and her son went out on a boat in Lake Piru in Ventura, California on July 8. When Naya did not return to the boat rental on time, parties were sent to look for the them. Searchers found Josey on the boat alone.

"[They] found her boat adrift with Naya’s 4-year-old son asleep on the boat and Naya was nowhere to be found," the department said in a statement to Us Weekly. "It is believed that Naya and her son were swimming in the lake near the boat and as they were getting back into the boat, her son made it into the boat and Naya went under water and did not resurface."

According to NBC Los Angeles, Naya's son was found with a life vest on, while an adult-sized vest was found on the boat. Officials were able to determine it was Naya's, after finding her identification on board.

Five days after Naya was first reported missing, the Ventura County Sheriff's Office has confirmed that her body has been found.

"We are confident the body we found is that of Naya Rivera," Ventura County Sheriff Bill Ayub said in a press conference. He also stated that "there is no indication of foul play or that this was a suicide."

According to TMZ, Naya's son was able to shed light on the tragic events. "Josey got back in the boat and when authorities arrived for a check, he told them he and his mom were swimming and he didn't know what happened to her," the outlet reports.

The devastating news comes on the 7-year anniversary of the death of Naya's former Glee co-star, Cory Monteith, who died of a overdose in 2013.
