Nanushka Pre-Fall 2021

Nanushka creative director Sandra Sandor has been adjusting to the new world and feeling optimistic for the new year.

That’s why, instead of playing it safe, she decided to get a little more creative and experimental for her label’s latest pre-fall collection, playing with new fabrics, silhouettes and embroidery techniques — all executed via Zoom calls with her design team.

After discovering an abstract picture frame in her home, which brought to mind Surrealist artwork, she started adding more abstract shapes to her signature tailoring and chic leather separates. Her approach was subtle: an extra large collar on a cream satin dress, a large flare on the bottom of suit pants, a squiggly shaped leather belt or an abstract pattern splashed across linen separates.

“We wanted to achieve a balance between the Surrealist mood and minimalism,” said Sandor, who has long relied on laid-back silhouettes and seasonless neutral hues. She kept her palette basic here, too, save for a delicious pink knitted set featuring contrasting yarns.

The Budapest-based label has been going strong, despite current challenges, expanding its accessories range to eyewear, opening its first boutique in London at the end of 2020 and looking for more retail locations, starting with L.A.
