It’s hard to top a sea of Democratic congresswomen in suffragette white, Melania Trump’s eyebrow-raising solo-glove action or even POTUS for that matter, but Speaker Nancy Pelosi may have pulled it off.
The California congresswoman — who also wore white for the occasion — joined Vice President Mike Pence in sitting behind President Trump during Tuesday’s State of the Union. While Pence gamely applauded during key moments of Trump’s speech, Pelosi was seen reading her notes and pointedly clapping at POTUS, prompting him to flash a series of tight grins.
Her literal clapback has now achieved meme status.
It helps to be a professional at this…I put many filters, edited this and that way until it was perfect and added a real Louvre frame to it. And put the shadow back in, too. pic.twitter.com/X1rtsiSlEy

She can kill with a clap, she can wound with her eyes
And she's far from impressed with your Soviet ties
And she'd quite like to stab you and laugh as you bleed
She thinks you're a child but she's Nancy Pelosi to me pic.twitter.com/gmbuW8dsIa

Other Pelosi reactions also garnered attention, from her unimpressed-seeming body language to her look of annoyance when Trump referenced “ridiculous partisan investigations.”

Pelosi later took to Twitter to slam the “misrepresentations” she objected to in the speech.

Pelosi’s actions were criticized by some viewers, however.
Nancy Pelosi is straight up rude!

Why is Nancy Pelosi making rude faces behind President Trump. It's like she is trying to get a fart out but trying to do it quietly..
— Danielle (@dmorse1991) February 6, 2019
@marthamaccallum how can Nancy Pelosi be so rude and disrespectful to fumble with some stupid papers while the president is giving his State of the Union Address?!! She should be reprimanded for that disgusting display of immature Behavior.

Trump may have worked in his own insult. CBS News reports that the president broke tradition by not waiting for Pelosi, in her role as Speaker of the House, to introduce him before he began his address.
The political leaders have famously clashed over Trump’s demand for funding for a proposed border wall, which resulted in one government shutdown, with the threat of another one looming.
