If you’re anything like us, one of your favorite family date nights is going to the movies. There’s something so special and exciting about picking something out to watch together, piling into the car, and making a beeline for a bucket of buttered popcorn bigger than your head. You’re ready to go now, aren’t you? Well, you’re in luck — there are some amazing family movies in theaters at this very moment.

You may have noticed heading into this new year that 2020 is shaping up to be a banner year for kid-friendly films. There are both Disney live-action adaptations and animated movies. There are two new non-sequel Pixar films on the way. Although, speaking of sequels, there will be lots. I mean, raise your hand if you’re dying for the next installments of Trolls, Croods, the Minions, and more (*raises hand*). Did we mention that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Emily Blunt will be bringing the classic Disney ride Jungle Cruise to the big screen?

Seriously, there’s a lot to look forward to at the movie theater this year… including the gems that have already been released and are waiting for you to watch. So, to the multiplex! After you peruse these family-friendly picks, of course.

Frozen II

Don’t let it go! You can still catch the highly anticipated sequel to the story of Anna and Elsa if you hurry. Considering it’s currently the highest all-time worldwide opening for an animated film, it must be good. Bonus? You’ll finally have a different song to hear your kid sing roughly 100 times a day.

Playing With Fire

Hello, this has firefighters, adorable dogs and three rambunctious but cute kids. What’s not to love? The fact that John Cena, Keegan-Michael Key and John Leguizamo play the crew of rugged firefighters who rescue the children makes it even more fun.

Jumanji: The Next Level

Listen, no one would blame you if you were hesitant to believe in this rebooted film at first. It’s impossible to imagine anything recapturing the magic of the original starring Robin Williams. But, we’ve gotta admit, this new version starring The Rock, Jack Black, Kevin Hart and Karen Gillan is pretty amazing. This is the second film in the franchise, so make sure you watch the first before hitting the theaters.

Star Wars: Episode IX — The Rise of Skywalker

Right up front, you should know this latest addition to the Star Wars canon is rated PG-13. Probably best to leave the little ones with a sitter. If you have tweens or teens who are Star Wars fanatics, though, you’ll obviously want to get the theater ASAP to see what happens when the surviving members of the resistance face the First Order once again.

Spies in Disguise

Based loosely on the 2009 animated short Pigeon: Impossible, Spies in Disguise didn’t get as much fanfare as some of the Disney releases in 2019 (cough, Frozen II). Don’t let that put you off, though — it features a truly killer ensemble cast voicing the animated characters, including Will Smith, Tom Holland, Rashida Jones, Ben Mendelsohn, Reba McEntire, Rachel Brosnahan, Karen Gillan, DJ Khaled, and Masi Oka. The gist? A secret agent (Smith) is accidentally turned into a pigeon by a super-smart young scientist (Holland), and the odd pair ends up having to work together to stop a cybernetic terrorist.

Little Women

Greta Gerwig’s adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s beloved novel isn’t just a good movie; it’s a gift. Run, don’t walk, to the theater to share the story of the March family with your own brood. It’s rated PG, so keep that in mind if you’re planning to take younger ones. Other than that, there’s literally nothing else that should give you pause about watching this one.

Doolittle

Robert Downey Jr. takes a swing at the iconic role of the eponymous animal-whispering doctor and, if you ask my kid, he hits a home run. The animals are a major draw here for both parents and little ones alike — they’re adorable and also voiced by top stars such as Jon Cena, Octavia Spencer, Emma Thompson and Selena Gomez.

Sonic the Hedgehog

Eesh with the pushback dates on this one! If your kid has been counting down the days (and has had to restart several times), they’ll be stoked to finally see this video-gaming critter in action. Plus, Jim Carry plays the evil Dr. Robotnik, and Jim Carry is always fun to watch.
