When you think of iconic Golden Globes red carpet moments, musicians don’t usually spring to mind. After all, it’s primarily an event celebrating the best of film and television, so memories of Angelina Jolie in that jaw-dropping Randolph Duke sequin gown from 1999 and Lupita Nyong’o in that brilliant red Ralph Lauren cape dress in 2014—her first appearance at the awards show—are much more easily remembered.

In the decades since the Globes began to be televised, though, many musicians have walked the red carpet, mostly due to the Best Song category (Madonna, Barbra Streisand, Donna Summer, and more have been nominated). And while the likes of Björk and Lady Gaga have toned town their notoriously over-the-top performance style for the Globes (although Björk did carry a bedazzled owl purse), others, like Cher, have used the event to pull boundary-pushing fashion moves, like when she wore a massive fur coat with a bikini top on the arm of Sonny Bono in 1973. Above, a look back on the musicians who put their own spin on Golden Globes red carpet style—and won.
