The first iteration, taking place this September in NYC, will honor Sebastião and Lélia Deluiz Wanick Salgado of the non-profit Instituto Terra, which helps with forest recovery. For the uninitiated, Salgado’s photography is world-renowned for its honest portrayal of native Brazilian culture and the ramifications of deforestation and mistreatment of natural resources. The gala will be co-chaired by Annie Leibovitz, and the Benefit Committee includes ELLE’s own Nina Garcia and designer Gabriela Hearst, among others. “Our partnership with Instituto Terra is an important opportunity for Sotheby’s to raise awareness and support to Sebastião and Lélia's deep and personal commitment to restore the Brazilian Atlantic Forest,” says Sotheby’s CEO Charles Stewart. “They have fully dedicated their resources and energy into planting trees, which stands alongside their artistic achievements as their life’s work and legacy.
