MSNBC Confirms 1999 Separation Payment To Female Staffer Following Chris Matthews’ Inappropriate Jokes
NBC News reported today that the network paid separation compensation to a female employee in 1999 who accused Chris Matthews of making inappropriate jokes and comments about her in front of other employees.
Both Matthews and the woman, an assistant producer, worked on what was then CNBC’s Hardball with Chris Matthews (now on MSNBC). The host received a formal reprimand following a review.
The story was first reported yesterday by conservative website The Daily Caller, with the Caller putting the woman’s separation compensation at $40,000 – a figure the website said was disputed by an MSNBC spokesperson as significantly too high.
The Daily Caller did not elaborate on the specific nature of Matthews’ comments, noting that “the network concluded that the comments were inappropriate and juvenile but were not intended to be taken as propositions.”
