How To Make Mother's Day Brunch Florals Shine — Tips From a Professional Florist
Flowers are a classic part of Mother's Day. They're fresh and seasonal, which makes them a timely gift, but they're also special and beautiful, just like mothers, grandmothers, and all the women we celebrate on this holiday. But with so many flower options, you want to make sure the ones you use for your Mother's Day brunch stand out. This Mother’s Day, top florists are styling garden blooms in surprising ways — and the results are stunning! Here, a floral pro shares the easy how-to’s.
Gorgeous Focal Point
“Spring is the most beautiful time of year for fresh flowers — and styling them in exciting new ways adds pure joy to any table or celebration,” says Michael Gaffney, author of Flower Power (Buy from Amazon, $16.99). Here, a vase is bursting with blooms in bright pinks and greens. To do: Fill a 7 inch-tall green vase halfway with water. Snip handfuls of pink and green flowers (like peonies, ranunculus, verbena, hyacinth, and hellebore) to 10 inches. Insert stems one at a time, forming a soft mound. Fill in gaps with leafy greenery.
'Blooming' Layer Cake
Adding a bunch of pretty flowers to a layer cake will charm everyone at your Mother’s Day brunch or luncheon. To do: Stack three cooled cake layers on a plate or platter, spreading a thin layer of white icing between each layer. Next, pour ½ cup of warmed heavy cream over one cup of pink candy melts and mix together until smooth. Spoon over top of cake and allow mixture to drip down the cake edges. Set a cupcake wrapper or two atop the cake and place a piece of cut-to-fit floral foam inside wrappers. Press garden or supermarket blooms into foam.
Pretty Seasonal Wreath
Whether hung on the back of a chair, a front door, or even a fence post, a floral circlet will offer guests a happy hello. To do: Gather a few handfuls of pink spring flowers (like roses or hydrangeas) and attach blooms to a wire or straw wreath form (from the craft store) using small pieces of floral wire. Continue until wreath is covered. Next, cut a handful of greenery or floral filler (like lady’s mantle) and attach to the wreath with wire, filling in gaps. Finish by tying a pink ribbon at the top of the wreath before displaying.
Floral Twinkler
Mother's Day flowers get an extra wow-factor from cozy candles. Enhance garden ambience with a sparkling floral wreath accent. To do: Twist the ends of a 14-inch length of floral wire together to form a circlet. Then, use smaller pieces of wire to attach garden blooms to the circlet until covered. Place on a small dish and nestle a white battery-run votive into the wreath’s center.

“I have always loved placing small flowering plants in petite party-store bags — they make cheery table accents or gifts for loved ones,” says Gaffney.
