These Are the Most Popular Flowers in Every State

From completing jigsaw puzzles and adult coloring books to baking banana bread, some unexpected pastimes have become commonplace since self-isolating during the pandemic. But it comes as no surprise that gardening, which is a typical activity during spring and summer, has gained popularity during this time. Planting and caring for your favorite blooms can be fun and relaxing. And if you've been wondering what other people's gardens across the country look like, now you can find out—thanks to this study of the most popular flowers in every state.

Based on online search volume and both wholesale and retail sales revenue, mail-order gardening company Breck's conducted a study to figure out the most popular flowers in each state. The Breck's team analyzed at Google Trends search volume data over a 90-day period, from March through May 2019, as well as over the past year.

The results? The top flowers throughout the U.S. from March through May 2020 include: calla lilies, hyacinth, cyclamen, lily, freesia, African violet, peonies, gardenia, buttercup, and gladiolus. The most searched-for flowers over the past year (May 2019 to May 2020) were sunflowers, hyacinth, camellias, tiger lilies, and cyclamen. In New York, the most popular flower flower during the past few months was tea roses. Texas's most searched-for flower was gardenias, and California's was orchids. The study also used the USDA’s Census of Horticultural Specialties to figure out the best-selling flowers in the U.S., and which states sold the most of each best-seller. According to the findings, petunias are the best-selling annual flower in the U.S., with an annual revenue of more than $262 million.
