Whether you are on the verge of making a move or have been living in the same state throughout your years, feeling safe in the place you call home is likely a key factor in deciding where to lay down roots for you and your family. But the truth of the matter is, some states are less safe than others. According to the latest data from the FBI Uniform Crime Reporting Program, an estimated 1.2 million violent crimes—defined as offenses that involve force or threat of force—occurred in the United States in 2018. And while that number is 3.3 percent less than 2017, it is a 4.4 percent increase from 2014. What's more, certain states are experiencing more violent crime than they have in years. With that, here are all 50 U.S. states ranked from least dangerous to most dangerous, based on their violent crime rate per capita. And for similar data on the metropolitan level, check out The 100 Most Dangerous Cities in America.
