Full disclosure: I played more Street Figher than Mortal Kombat growing up. (My mom called Mortal Kombat trash because of the extreme gore, just like South Park, Jackass, The Osbournes and everything else that was actually popular when I was in middle school.) So I don’t have a big nostalgic attachment to the Mortal Kombat franchise.

All the same, I’m weirdly excited to watch this movie when it premieres tonight. Maybe it’s because I love Kung Fu movies, or because I really miss going to the movie theater for midnight premieres. The truth is, I don’t really care why. I’m just ready to watch a bunch of video game characters punch, kick and stab each other to death to win an interdimensional fighting tournament with the entire fate of the world at stake.

So if you want to learn how to watch Mortal Kombat onlline with me tonight, then read on for all of the details, then head to HBO Max to start watching. So far, the movie has a 59% on Rotten Tomatoes, but you don’t watch Mortal Kombat because you expect it to be Oscar-worthy entertainment. It’s just good gory fun.

How To Watch Mortal Kombat

Like Godzilla vs Kong, Mortal Kombat will premier simultaneously in theaters and online via HBO Max. To stream the movie online, you can sign up for HBO Max for $14.99/month. Unfortunately, HBO Max does not offer a free trial, but you can cancel at any time. In addition to instant access to Mortal Kombat, you’ll also be able to watch the hundreds of movies on HBO Max and TV shows like The Sopranos and Game of Thrones. Because of the huge selection of TV shows and movies, HBO Max is my favorite streaming service of 2021.

If you choose not to cancel your subscription, you can look forward to more blockbuster premieres later this summer. In the Heights premieres on June 11, Space Jam: A New Legacy on July 16 and Suicide Squad on August 6. For $15 a month, that’s a pretty great deal, and unlike Disney+, you don’t have to pay extra to watch Mortal Kombat.

When Does Mortal Kombat Premiere?

HBO Max movies premiere at midnight on the west coast, or 3 a.m. on the east coast. Mortal Kombat premieres at 3 a.m. on Friday, April 23, 2021. If you’re on the east coast, that means you either need to wait until Friday morning or stay up really late Thursday night. Either way, you don’t have to wait long.

Watch the Mortal Kombat Trailer

Still aren’t sure whether you want to watch Mortal Kombat on HBO Max? In addition to the cinematic trailer released earlier this year, you can watch the first seven minutes of the movie in a new trailer that features the opening showdown between Scorpion and Sub Zero, played in the movie by Hiroyuki Sanada and Joe Taslim.

How To Watch Mortal Kombat Online Free

Can you stream Mortal Kombat for free? Not quite. Unless you want to wade through the sketchy websites that stream bootleg movies, which is a very, very crappy thing to do, there’s no way to sign up for a free trial of HBO Max. If you’re lucky enough to have a friend’s password, then go for it!

However, there is one way to test out HBO Max without paying $14.99. While HBO Max doesn’t have a free trial, Hulu does, and new Hulu customers can add on HBO Max for just $5.99. If you set a calendar reminder and remember to cancel before the recurring billing kicks in, then you can save some money and still watch Mortal Kombat online, if not for free, then pretty close to free.

That being said, $14.99 isn’t that much money, and you would have to pay that much to see a movie like this in theaters anyway. Our advice: bite the bullet and sign up for HBO Max.
