The Morning Show Joins a List of Productions and Events Canceled or Postponed Because of Coronavirus

The Daytime Emmy Awards have been canceled.

"There are just too many unknowns right now, not the least of which is whether we would actually be permitted to stage an event in June involving more than one thousand live participants," Terry O’Reilly, National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences chairman, said, TVLine reports. "With deadlines to make significant financial commitments upon us, it seems irresponsible to move forward as we have in the past."

NATAS president Adam Sharp stated that "alternative ideas to celebrate" are already being proposed and that further details would be releaed in the coming weeks. In addition to the Daytime Emmy Awards's cancelation, the Academy of Country Music Awards and Nickelodeon’s Kids’ Choice Awards have decided to postpone their ceremonies this year due to safety concerns.

Amid fears of the spreading coronavirus, several TV shows and movies have halted production — including Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston's The Morning Show.

Though no one on the set of the Apple TV show is known to have contracted the virus, the production team is going on a two-week hiatus out of precaution, a producer for the show said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter.

Earlier this week, Riverdale also shut down production in Vancouver, Canada after a crewmember came in contact with a person who tested positive for the coronavirus. Similarly, Baz Lurhmann's upcoming Elvis Presley biopic was put on hold after Tom Hanks, one of the film's stars, tested positive for the virus. Other movies and TV shows pausing production at the moment include Ryan Murphy's The Prom, Marvel's Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and reality show Survivor. Disney has also hit pause on many of its live-action features, including The Little Mermaid. Late-night shows have begun recording without stiduo audiences in order to protect against the virus.

As the coronavirus spreads and fears escalate, the entertainment industry has taken a hit — Coachella and Stagecoach music festivals, which were both set to take place in April, have been postponed. South by Southwest Festival, set to in Austin was also canceled over concerns about the virus, with the festival laying off 50 employees to "stop the bleeding" after the cancellation, while PaleyFest in Los Angeles has been postponed. Miami's Ultra Music Festival has been called off, and artists like Pearl Jam and Miley Cyrus have put their concerts on hold.

In New York City, Broadway shows have shut down and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, one of the largest museums in the world, announced it would temporarily close, as the city banned most public gatherings of more than 500 people. California has also called for a ban of public gatherings of more than 250 people.
