More Is More: How to Layer Necklaces Like the It Girls This Summer

Minimalists, look away. A-listers are united on the fact that—this summer—the more necklaces, the better. The obsession makes sense: During a year when making an impression was restricted to our computer screens, “waist-up” dressing offered a fresh way to smarten up an outfit. Zoom-worthy jewelry became a focal point of casual catch-ups and work calls, even if people were wearing tracksuits.

The enthusiasm for layered trophy jewels is yet to cease. Hailey Bieber has been fueling the trend. Her favorite combinations include a thick gold chain from Anita Ko, a herringbone style from Fallon, plus sweet, beaded pieces from Frasier Sterling and Ian Charms. Husband Justin Bieber and Dua Lipa are also fans of the latter brand, which founder Lisa Sahakian describes as “wild and fun.” Dua regularly complements hers with stacked gems from Arms of Eve and Éliou.

Rihanna, too, has embraced the hype with a selection of flashy gold chains. She posed for a recent Instagram post in a graphic Married to the Mob tee, Linda Farrow x The Attico sunglasses, and a medley of chains from Bulgari, Briony Raymond (inscribed with her Pisces zodiac), and a chunky vintage piece from David Yurman.

Even confirmed minimalist Rosie Huntington-Whiteley has dabbled with necklace layering by way of a diamond parure from London-based Jessica McCormack (who regularly supplies the model with gems). Huntington-Whiteley experimented with two different lengths of McCormack’s ball ’n’ chain design, adding a sparkling pendant to the longer of the two.

New mothers Emily Ratajkowski and Gigi Hadid, on the other hand, have been loading on necklaces inscribed with their respective baby names. Kendall Jenner, Meghan Markle, and Jennifer Lopez have also shown a preference for personalized jewelry—the latter confirmed the return of “Bennifer” with a “BEN” monogram necklace.

When she’s not wearing her sentimental ode to Affleck, J. Lo has worn multiple charms from celebrity-approved label, Foundrae. “Layering is quite personal. Always start with the first piece you want to wear and build from there,” founder Beth Bugdaycay told British Vogue’s jewelry and watch director Rachel Garrahan. “The trick is to make your chain unique to you, so it becomes a talisman that you can wear every day.”
