As Yellowstone Season Five takes a mid-season break for the Dutton family, the cowboy drama has gone back in time once again to explain how the fight for this particular plot of Montana land began. Titled 1923, the prequel series follows 1883—chronicling the history of the Dutton family ranch from generation to generation. John Dutton’s ancestors, Jacob and Cara Dutton, are played by Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren in the miniseries, alongside Timothy Dalton, Brandon Sklenar, Michelle Randolph, and Game of Thrones's Jerome Flynn.

The series “introduces a new generation of the Dutton family as they explore the early twentieth century when pandemics, historic drought, the end of Prohibition and the Great Depression all plague the mountain west, and the Duttons who call it home,” Paramount described. The premiere episode broke records for Paramount+ with over 7.4 million viewers tuning in, and there's now a second season already in production. Deadline reported last October that Sheridan would create two, eight-episode seasons of 1923 to tell the Dutton's full story, but now The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that the series has been renewed. 1923 also follows the ancestry of Black Rock Reservation Chief Thomas Rainwater, as well as a Dutton family member named Spencer who hunts big game in Africa. Saddle up, because it’s about to get rough out in Paradise Valley.

When and Where Did 1923 Premiere?

The first episode of 1923 premiered on the Paramount Network on Sunday, December 18, following an episode of Yellowstone—but the rest of the series streams weekly on Paramount+. After the first four episodes aired, 1923 is now also on a short break before its return this Sunday, February 5. The first season will then run through February with another four episodes before the cast returns to film Season Two.

What Is Happening on 1923 So Far?

Following a shootout with sheep herder Banner Creighton (Flynn), the Dutton family took on some major casualties. 1883's James Dutton (Tim McGraw) eventually passed the Yellowstone ranch onto his brother, Jacob (Harrison Ford) and his wife Cara (Helen Mirren), but now they need even more help to protect their land from those who wish to take it for their own. Before the break, Cara reached out to her nephew, Spencer (Brandon Sklenar), about returning home to help the family. The World War I veteran and African big game hunter must now brave an adventure to return to his family in Montana.

Where Can I Get Caught Up on Yellowstone?

This is where it gets tricky. For some reason, Yellowstone Seasons One through Four are only available to stream on Peacock. Season Five, is only available to stream on the Paramount Network app with a cable-subscription login. Meanwhile, the spinoff shows 1883 and 1923 will only be available to Paramount+ subscribers. Paramount+ is also home to Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan’s other shows, including Tulsa King and Mayor of Kingstown, but both series exist outside of the Yellowstone universe of shows. A bit confusing, for better or worse—but hopefully we helped.
