Some people are born with a “green thumb,” and others work hard to be able to care and nurture plants and keep them alive. As parents, the added responsibility of keeping up with the watering and care demands of houseplants isn’t always simple. One mom, however, was super proud of herself for keeping a succulent alive in her house for two years. Until she realized the plant she was caring for and lovingly watering was plastic.
Caelie Wilkes is a stay-at-home mom in California, and she shared the story in a now-viral post on Facebook. “I’ve had this beautiful succulent for about 2 years now. I was so proud of this plant. It was full, beautiful coloring, just an over all perfect plant,” she writes.
She found the right space in her home to give this plant the perfect amount of light. She loved on this plant so much that she “would get so defensive” if someone else tried to water her succulent “because I just wanted to keep good care of it.”
It wasn’t until she decided that she wanted to transplant her succulent into another vase that she realized the past two years were kind of a lie. “I go to pull it from the original plastic container it was purchased with to learn this plant was FAKE,” Wilkes writes.
“I put so much love into this plant! I washed its leaves. Tried my hardest to keep it looking it’s best, and it’s completely plastic!” she continues. “How did I not know this. I pull it from the container it’s sitting on Styrofoam with sand glued to the top!”

What a hit to the ego. Wilkes had been so proud of herself for her green thumb and giving her plant all the love and attention to keep it thriving. “I feel like these last two years have been a lie,” she says.
How did she not know, though? There are many reasons we could guess as to why she went two years without noticing: tired, blinded by how proud she was of herself, that green thumb being anything but green?
Her post has gotten a lot of attention since she posted about her succulent lie on February 28th. It’s gotten 11,000 reactions and nearly 7,000 comments, which are mainly supportive and a good healthy dose of laughter.
