Give mom a little taste of Cape Cod with these local Mother's Day gift ideas

If you have a foodie mom who loves Cape Cod, we have a few ideas on how you can honor her on Mother’s Day while supporting local businesses.

Don’t ask mom to cook for you on Mother’s Day, but do consider buying her a gift that does double-duty, such as a locally crafted platter filled with baked goods. Does coffee fuel her day? Pick a few kinds of java that are locally roasted and ground for her to try. Can you ever go wrong with cake? Or give her an experience she can use for years to come by gifting her a jam-making class. Who knows, that's a gift that might make its way back to you someday contained in a mason jar.

All Cape Cook’s Supply

239 Main St, Hyannis, 508-790-8908, https://www.facebook.com/All-Cape-Cooks-Supply-451192235321392/, open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.

“We have a couple of dessert stands that would be lovely with a box of macarons from Chez Antoine (Cafe) or a dessert from Bread + Roses – or even a book from Bread + Roses – which both recently opened on Main Street in Hyannis,” says Kim Dunn who, with her husband, Geoff, owns All Cape Cook’s Supply in downtown Hyannis.

The treats are an immediate gift and the platter or dessert stand a lasting memory of your consideration, Dunn says.

Platters available now include an ethereal rose pattern and a traditional blue-and-white nautical pattern. Also available are gurgling cod – vibrantly colored pitchers in the shape of fish that gurgle when liquid is poured from them.

If you can’t decide, Dunn recommends a gift certificate. She, like many other retailers, is having trouble getting her spring/summer inventory delivered, but she expects to have a score of new items in the next month.

Ila Cheverie, a trainer at the original Snowy Owl location in Brewster, says the local roastery specializes in medium roast beans that come in a variety of flavor profiles. Reading about various beans on the chalkboard hanging over the counter is like reading the attributes of wine: floral, dark chocolate, hints of cherry, smoky – the list goes on.

“I like our Ethiopian right now; it’s very sweet and fruity,” Cheverie says.

The locally roasted coffee beans are sold in half-pound packages for $14 to $18, up to two-pound packages for $58. Snowy Owl staffers will grind the beans for you, if you like, but they will ask what brewing method is used because it affects how the beans should be ground. So check out how mom makes her morning Joe before you head out to buy her beans.

Miles, a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, who honed her skills as a pastry chef at Boston restaurants including Pudding and Lumiere, opened White Lion Baking Company in 2012. If the name rings a bell or the wild-maned lion on the logo looks familiar, it may be because the bakery supplies 150 stores, including Whole Foods of the North Atlantic region.

Here are a couple of ways to approach the White Lion: There is still time to order celebration cakes, which sell for $45 for a 6-inch and $64 for a 9-inch.

Green Briar Jam Kitchen

There is a onesie that says “If he’s alive at 5, I’ve done my job.” No one ever defined whether that meant 5 p.m. when the workday was done or 5 years of age, but the point is we’ve all known — or raised — that active toddler. So now that Mom is no longer busy rescuing you from jumping off the back steps because you thought you could fly, it’s time for her to indulge in some of the activities for which your childhood didn’t leave time.

Jam-making, the old-fashioned way, may be just the thing.

Sign mom up for a jam-making session in the 117-year-old Green Briar Jam Kitchen in Sandwich. There, along with five others, she will learn to make a seasonal jam — starting with apricot on May 4 and changing weekly until blueberry lime on June 11 — the old-fashioned way using pots and other equipment of the era. Tickets, at $85 per person or $75 for members, are available on the website but the small classes fill quickly.
