Model Maye Musk reveals her secret to staying slim at 71

Model and author Maye Musk — the chic, white-haired woman in CoverGirl ads — knows a thing or two about aging well. Now 71, Musk became the oldest spokesmodel in the company’s history two years ago.

She tells Yahoo Entertainment that one key to maintaining her looks over the years has been her diet. It hasn’t always been easy for her to maintain a healthy weight, she shares, despite the fact Musk is a dietician.

“In my 30s, I gained a lot of weight. I gained 65 pounds,” says Musk, who is the mother of Tesla CEO, Elon Musk. “I’ve kept my weight down for 30 years. Even now, it’s hard.”

She does it with her food choices.

“I’m on the Flexitarian diet, which means I eat vegetarian at home,” Musk explains. “When I go out, I will have meat, fish or chicken, but small portions.”

For the sweet stuff, she follows a different rule for herself.

“I have to keep temptation away from me, like desserts, chocolates, cookies — that’s my weakness,” she says. “If people bring me chocolates, I can’t open the box. Too weak. You need to know your weaknesses, and you’ve got to keep them out of reach.”

However, she admits that her way of eating isn’t for everyone. For those looking to be as radiant as her later in life or for those who just want to eat more healthfully, Musk recommends the Mediterranean diet, the DASH diet, and WW (formerly Weight Watchers).

“I’d say I’m at the prime, but I’ll probably be in my prime, maybe, mid-80s — I don’t know,” Musk says. “But I’m sure on a roll now.”
