At this stage of the pandemic, my bangs have grown out, my ends are split, and my feet are in desperate need of a proper pedi. But the beauty service I miss the most? Without question, that would be lash extensions.
I’ve always maintained that they are the single most effective thing you can do to streamline your routine. When my lashes are filled, I can skip eye makeup altogether and still look wide awake. And the application process itself is a built-in excuse to take a nap—or, at the very least, take a break from all screens.
Needless to say, when my local lash studio reopened a few weeks ago, I eagerly made an appointment…which I ended up cancelling the day before. Because the idea of being thisclose to someone for over an hour, even masked, made me feel a bit uneasy.
And so, my search for home alternatives began.
Falsies or strip lashes have always irritated my eyes (and I find them to be tedious to apply). Trimming them helped with fit, but they still felt too heavy on my lids. I found more success with the individual clusters, but, as with most of these options, they’re not really meant to be worn for more than the day you apply them.
I craved a longer-lasting option that looked super fluffy and natural but felt like nothing on. Tall order, I know, but I found it in the Lashify Control Kit.
This comprehensive kit comes with two sets of lash clusters (12 clusters per cartridge), a curved wand applicator, an adhesive bond and a waterproof sealant. You can choose between three options: First, the “Amplify” set, which is their signature style with soft, wispy lashes on the thinnest seam. Next is the “Bold” set, which has a thicker seam and densely packed lashes with a strong curl to give you more volume. Last is the “Curl” set, which has the lightweight seam of the Amplify lashes, but more curl, making it a popular choice for hooded and monolid eyes.
There is a bit of a learning curve to using these at first (mainly having to do with how much bond to apply and how long it should dry before applying each cluster), but there are tons of tutorials on the brand’s Instagram that I found very helpful. After about two tries, I could confidently get both eyes done in five minutes.
Here’s a before/after of me wearing the lashes. Note: I’m only wearing three clusters per eye here because I’m rationing my last set, but I typically wear four to fill out my lashline.
The best part about the Lashify lashes are that they really do look and feel like extensions, which is to say that they make your eyes pop and are virtually weightless. The clusters are designed to be worn for up to seven days. Personally, I’ve gotten to the three- or four-day mark before some of them start to lift, but I am also a watery-eyed, contact lens-wearing, frequent eye rubber, so I’ll take that into consideration.
Where Lashify loses a few points is price. At $145, it’s definitely a splurge, but if it’s any consolation, once you have the tools (i.e., the wand, bond and sealant), you can just buy the lashes themselves at 20 bucks a pop. Still pricey, for sure, but far less than I pay to maintain monthly extensions.
