In US news and current events today, residents of Minneapolis, Minnesota found a unique way to address the homeless crisis and housing crisis in their city: They commandeered a Sheraton hotel and transformed it into a Sheraton Sanctuary hotel for the homeless population. The affordable housing crisis has left millions without a home, and that's even before the Coronavirus pandemic swept the nation. COVID-19 has made an already precarious economy even worse, and as the Black Lives Matter movement swept the nation after the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis, we cannot ignore that Black Americans and other people of color are disproportionately likely to be housing insecure and/or homeless. Hotel sanctuaries for the homeless are a good start, but in order to truly address the housing crisis, we need to think about affordable housing and how we support the most vulnerable citizens of our country.
