Never Have I Ever has become a staple in teen TV since it debuted in 2020, as it covers a range of topics from grief to gaining social status and navigating relationships. Following the highly anticipated premiere of the comedy's third season, series creator Mindy Kaling revealed that we might not see our fave characters like Devi, Ben, Eleanor, and Fabiola head to college.

"When you launch a show, it's really hard to figure everybody out. Once you have them, you're like, '40 episodes? That's it?,'" Mindy said in an interview with E! News. "I love the character Devi, I love her family, I love her friends. I love this actress so much. I would do the show until she was a grandma."

While that sounds promising, she revealed that four seasons was an ideal runtime to tell the stories of the Sherman Oaks crew. "Unfortunately, young people grow up and you can't be 17 forever," Mindy said. "I'm really happy with where we ended with the stories and with the characters' growth. It was a very emotional finale. I truly love this world and what the actors brought to these characters. It made it one of the best creative experiences of my life."

The show's co-creator, Lang Fisher, dished that she and Mindy did have talks about revisiting the series at a later time, but that they decided against it because of other teen shows that couldn't successfully cross over into more mature storylines. "We did talk about it, but that's a hard jump to make," Lang told E! News before saying that it's hard to introduce a whole new world.

"It's hard to get people to care about [characters] as much as you cared in the first iteration. It just felt like if we ever wanted to come back to these characters again, we would just have to start with a whole new show. It just felt a little tricky to make that leap," Lang explained.

While we lost out on seeing Devi, Ben, and the rest of the gang transition from nerdy teens to more established college students, at least Lang confirmed we'll get to see Paxton take on his freshman year at Arizona State University in season 4 of Never Have I Ever.
