  • Mindhunter will be returning for season two on August 16th.

  • Showrunners have revealed the second season will include characters based on David Berkowitz, a.k.a. Son of Sam, and Charles Manson.

  • The original cast, including Jonathan Groff, will also return for the new season.

If you have a Netflix subscription (or still know your ex's password), then you know the streaming service has become the go-to spot for serial killer content, from docuseries The Ted Bundy Tapes to stalker drama You to the Ted Bundy biopic Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile over the past year. So, if you've got true crime cravings in need of satisfying, you're in luck. Netflix is (finally!) giving its true crime fans what they've spent the last two years begging for: Mindhunter season two.

No, this is not a drill. The thrilling true-crime drama is really back, and it already looks like it'll be better than ever. That might be hard to do, considering the show became an instant hit back in 2017 when the first season premiered and was almost immediately renewed for a second season. But, the masterminds behind Mindhunter have had two years to perfect the story they want to tell, complete with a whole cast of new characters as well as some of your old favorites.

And now, the wait is almost over! In just over a month, you can Netflix and cringe (sorry, had to) along with Special Agents Holden Ford and Bill Tench, as well as the rest of the gang. But in the meantime, here's everything you need to know about Mindhunter season two:

When does Mindhunter Season 2 premiere on Netflix?

Mindhunter fans, rejoice! Y'all just got an official release date: August 16th, according to The Hollywood Reporter. That means you can now start counting down the days until you're able to binge the second season of Netflix's thrilling true-crime drama (and can schedule your re-watch of season one accordingly).

But hey, after waiting this long, diehards fans will probably take anything at this point.

Who's in the Mindhunter cast?

For starters, fan favorite Jonathan Groff will return to play Special Agent Holden Ford (the show's main character, who's based on real FBI Agent John Douglas). Producers Charlize Theron and David Fincher (you know, the man behind The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and The Social Network) also revealed that Holt McCallany (who plays Bill Tench) and Anna Torv (who plays Wendy Carr) will also be back for round two.

Recently released images from Netflix reveal new cast members will also include Joe Tuttle, Albert Jones, Stacey Roca, Michael Cerveris, Lauren Glazier, and Sierra McClain, per The Hollywood Reporter.

Meanwhile, Cameron Britton's gentle yet vicious serial killer character, Edmund Kemper, has not yet been confirmed for the show's second run. Cameron's been mum on the matter, telling Inverse "No comment" when the topic was broached in a recent interview.

What will Mindhunter Season 2 be about?

For its second go-around, Mindhunter will be taking a look at not one, but three additional murder cases: the Atlanta Child Murders, which took place between 1979 and 1981; the serial killings committed by David Berkowitz (also known as Son of Sam); and the murders by cult leader Charles Manson, who Ford expressed interest in interviewing in season one.

Of those three crimes, Mindhunter executive producer David Fincher said the new season will mainly focus on the Atlanta child murders. "We could probably have done three seasons on the Atlanta child murders," he said during a recent podcast. "It’s a huge and sweeping and tragic story." He added that season two would also include the FBI being "dragged, kicking and screaming, into the present."

The season two trailer has yet to drop publicly (womp womp), but, according to The Hollywood Reporter, new images and a new, privately released trailer revealed that **not-really-spoiler alert** Ford does return to his work with the FBI. He and Tench visit Kemper and ask for his help solving a new case.

"Have you got somebody, Holden? Somebody you can't catch?" Kemper reportedly asks the pair in the trailer.

"This person you are after, he has an overwhelming fantasy life," Kemper continues. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the scenes then shift to introduce the Atlanta child murders plot. "Fantasies of what he's done. What he wants to do," Kemper goes on to say. "His dreams will consume him. Soon, the real world too much to bear."

Tench then asks, "How do we catch a fantasy?" (Fair question.) To which Kemper responds: "If he's any good, you can't."

Like the first season, the new trailer ends with a woman in a bathroom, screaming at whatever she has discovered. So...yeah, you can expect to be in for a wild ride this season.

Need a quick recap? Here's all the true stories that inspired Mindhunter season one:

What else can fans expect from the new season of Mindhunter?

For starters, McCallany hinted that another serial killer, Dennis Rader, known as the
"BTK Killer" and played by Sonny Valicenti on the show, might have a bigger role this season. In season one, all fans saw were short, mysterious clips, but according to McCallany, "we may see more of him" come season two.

In not-so-good news, former FBI agent John E. Douglas (who provided the real-life inspiration for Mindhunter) said in a recent interview with Vulture that the second season will only have eight episodes—two less than the first season. But despite that, Douglas also mentioned that the show will cover a "five-year arc."

Three months may seem like a ways away, but that can only mean this next season's going to be extra good... right? Right?!
