If you binge-watched Sex Education over the weekend, you likely didn’t expect to fall in love with Ruby Matthews, Moordale Secondary’s resident mean girl. It came as a surprise when we found out our beloved protagonist Ottis — who is not so suave with the ladies— had fallen under her spell in the new season. But it turns out that Ottis was just the guy to help Ruby open up and let her guard down. Played by 23-year-old Mimi Keene, Ruby experiences major character development, and by the end of the third season is no longer defined by her snobbery or shallow remarks. Leaving behind her need to be perfect, she walks out of the third season as a hilarious and multifaceted character beloved by fans all thanks to actress Mimi Keene.
In an interview with with Glamour Mimi explained, "I'm excited about this new element to Ruby, in the sense that you find out a lot more of who she is behind the bravado of, ‘I'm perfect. Everything in my life is brilliant. I'm better than you." After her killer performance on this season of Sex Education I have a feeling this is just the beginning of a long career. Mimi grew up in Southern London
The now London based actress spent her whole life in England, but was born and raised in the town of Hertfordshire, a county just north of the capital.
She studied at Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts
Mimi studied at Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts, a renowned performing arts school, from 2009 to 2014. The school opened nearly 110 years ago. If this sounds familiar, it’s because you might know a few other celebrities that attended the academy, like Naomi Campbell, Russell Brand, and Julianne Hough, just to name a few.
Her acting debut was at the Royal Court Theater
In 2010 she began her professional stage career. Mimi played Janey a 10-year old with a mean bully streak in the play Kin. The play was about a girls boarding school in the 1990s. A critic for the Gaurdian said this about Mimi's perfomance, "Mimi Keene as Janey and Ciara Southwood as Mimi, watched over by Annette Badland as a perceptive teacher, are unnervingly good."
She was a series regular on EastEnders
Mimi first gained attention through her role of Cindy Williams on the popular British soap opera EastEnders. Cindy becomes pregnant at 14, and is later suspected in being involved with a murder case, so all the drama you would expect from a soap opera.
She drove four hours to the set of Sex Education each day
All those driving scenes come very natural to Mimi, who loves a long car ride.. In an interview with Glamour Mimi said, "You can either take two hours and a bit or you can take four hours. It was a good four hours. I just love driving. It's my favorite activity in the world, which is why I love to do the driving scenes."
Her real-life dog appears in Sex Education season 3
That's right! So the dog that Ruby keeps in her locker is actually Mimi's and she is a proud dog mom. She told Glamour, “I've been trying to land her a role for the past three years, and she's just landed it this season."
