It looks like Mike Tyson is getting in the boxing ring quicker than we thought. The only thing is… he’s fighting a shark?

Yes, you read that correctly. The former heavyweight champion plans on facing some deep-rooted fears by fighting a shark in a brand-new special to kick off Shark Week 2020, which he posted to his social media accounts on Wednesday. Titled Tyson vs. Jaws: Rumble for the Reef, fans can tune in to Discovery Channel on August 9th at 8 P.M. to see who's going to win: Tyson or the feared water animal. And the best part? The commentator calling the shots will be none other than iconic ring announcer Michael Buffer (you know: "Let's get ready to RUMMMMBLE!!!").

“I took on this challenger to overcome fears I still deal with in life,” the boxer said about the showdown in an official statement obtained by Entertainment Weekly. “I equate this with overcoming my fear of getting back into the ring at 54 years old.”

“I learned from this experience doing Shark Week,” he continued, “that whatever intimidates me, I am still able to step up to the challenge of overcoming anything that would prevent me from accomplishing my life’s mission of reaching my highest potential in life and bringing me closer to God.”

Is there anything fans can expect from the showdown? Not necessarily, but given how dedicated Tyson had been recently to return to the boxing ring, chances are it’s going to be a pretty interesting fight.

While this is just the beginning of the eight-day television event, now in its 32nd year, viewers can also check out old and new types of programming, including a special about how the pandemic is helping sharks “reclaim the oceans” worldwide.

And if you’re one of those who are worried injuries may potentially occur—the network gives their promise that no sharks will be harmed during the fight.
