Mike Gundy makes good on word, gives $35K for school security
Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy was not kidding when he said he would pay for security efforts in the Stillwater School District.
Gundy gave an impassioned speech at a school board meeting in March in the aftermath of the deadly high school shooting in Parkland, Florida. The coach said he understood the state’s school funding problems and would be willing to foot the bill for security guards if it was needed.
Tuesday, the school district approved a $35,000 donation from Gundy.
When he was at the meeting in March, Gundy asked the board if they had a plan for school safety.
“Do we have people in our schools to protect our kids? What is the answer if someone comes into our schools … and who’s responsible for that?” Gundy said at the meeting.
Oklahoma’s teachers are still in the middle of their walkout over the state’s treatment of schools. School funding has been severely slashed in the state and teacher pay in the state is some of the worst in the country. Teachers have been advocating for higher wages and more state money to pay for necessary school supplies.
The Oklahoma walkout came after West Virginia teachers walked out. Gundy voiced his support for teachers last week, saying he was 100 percent behind educators in the state.
