Former U.S. Senator Mike Enzi, 77, passed away on July 26, three days after a serious bicycle accident near his home in Gillette, Wyoming.

According to the Gillette News Record, Enzi was found lying unconscious next to his bike around 8:30 p.m. on July 23 by an unnamed samaritan, who called 911 to report it. The Gillette police department said it also received an Apple Watch distress call at 8:18 p.m. saying that the wearer had taken a “hard fall” and was unresponsive.

Enzi, who had a broken neck and broken ribs, was taken to a local hospital, where he was stabilized. He was then airlifted to the UCHealth Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland, Colorado.

Lieutenant Brent Wasson told the Gillette News Record that there was no indication that anyone else was involved in the incident.

Enzi started his political career at the age of 30 when he became the mayor of Gillette, where he served for two four-year terms, according to the Associated Press. He was a member of the Republican party and was elected to the Wyoming House in 1986 and then the state Senate in 1991.

Enzi was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1997, where he served up until January 3, 2021. He was widely known as a “consensus builder” for his ability to work across party lines.

“Today, Wyoming mourns the loss of a giant, Mike Enzi,” current U.S. Senator for Wyoming Cynthia Lummis said in a statement. “Mike spent his life working to make Wyoming a better place while creating opportunities for our people… He was a soft-spoken leader, but the legislative wins he delivered loudly attest to the impact of his service. At a time of increasing political incivility, Mike Enzi managed to tactfully navigate the upper chamber, producing results that will be felt for generations to come.”

“The family is planning to hold a celebration of a life well-lived, with details being shared at a later date,” a post read on Enzi’s official Facebook page.
