Mikaela Shiffrin's PyeongChang wait continues as high winds delay women's slalom

American superstar skier Mikaela Shiffrin will have to wait another day to make her debut at the PyeongChang Olympics after high winds postponed the women’s slalom until Friday morning (Thursday night in the United States).

The delay comes a couple of days after the giant slalom, originally scheduled for Monday, was canceled. The giant slalom is now scheduled for Thursday in PyeongChang, so Shiffrin will be competing on back-to-back days.

Shiffrin, 22, is looking to defend her slalom Olympic gold medal from Sochi in 2014, a victory that made her the youngest ever to win gold in the event. She also took gold at the 2017 World Championships in the slalom and has drawn comparisons to Michael Phelps for her incredible dominance in the event.

Shiffrin enters these games in position to enter — and potentially medal — in all five alpine skiing disciplines: downhill, super-G, giant slalom, slalom and alpine combined. No one has ever won all five at an Olympic games, man or woman.

But because of the weather, she’ll wait yet another day to try to make history.
