Although the secret to making the perfect cup of tea has long been debated, the healthiest and best-tasting kind is made in the microwave, at least according to 2012 research that recently resurfaced after a character in a popular UK TV show was slammed for microwaving the drink.

The research was conducted by Dr. Quan Vuong, from the University of Newcastle in New South Wales, Australia, who specializes in ways to "add value" to natural products, ABC Radio Syndey reports. In his study, Dr. Vuong extracted and purified the important components of green and black tea and found that using the method below activated 80 percent of the caffeine, theanine, and polyphenol (and generates the best taste):

1. Put hot water in the cup with your teabag.
2. Heat in the microwave for 30 seconds on half power.
3. Let it sit for a minute.

Theanine is an essential amino acid, which is said to promote relaxation, while polyphenols, also found in dark chocolate, are antioxidants linked to the prevention of degenerative diseases.

Despite the reported benefits of microwaved tea for your tastebuds and your health, tea lovers everywhere (especially in Britain) have been losing it on Twitter, insisting this technique just isn't right.

It’s not the first time the subject has sparked national outcry, and chances are, it won't be the last. Still, all bets are off until the Queen throws in her two cents (or tea bag) herself.
