Michaela Coel was a vision in neon at the 2021 Primetime Emmy Awards.

The I May Destroy You actor wore a Christopher John Rogers gown in a shade the designer referred to as "sulphur." It consisted of two pieces: a strapless bandeau top, and an ankle-length column skirt with a sash and two tails trailing behind her. She accessorized the look with matching shoes, a necklace with square diamonds, gold and white earrings, and a white square ring.

The star's semi-autobiographical HBO drama received nine Emmy nominations this year, with Coel earning nods directing, writing, and acting in the show. The Misfits author told Variety that she initially worried that audiences may not connect with the show's challenging subject matter.

"I think that this is the tip of the iceberg in terms of using fiction to really bring audiences to quite personal, challenging and dark places and asking audiences to question the world around them. The way people received the show, as we would say in London, gave me vim," she said.

The Chewing Gum actress also opened up about drafting acceptance speeches for award ceremonies, sharing that she finds herself crying at her keyboard while writing.

"When you are nominated for something and you have to make a speech, I’m forced to practice the act of gratitude again. So, I remember all over again how incredible it is that all these people watched my show, that all these people helped me create the show that has spoken to and stimulated so many people in the world that I found myself nominated on this list," she says.
