Danny DeVito’s favorite Batman spoke with press at the 74th annual Emmy Awards, where he addressed the cancellation of his would-be return to the franchise.
In the Emmy’s press room, TVLine asked Dopesick winner Michael Keaton—which is his first ever Emmy award—for his reaction to the “unceremonious” post-production cancelation of Batgirl, which was slated to premiere on HBO Max.
“I think it was a business decision,” the star said, adding diplomatically, “I’m going to assume it was a good one,” though he admitted to not following closely along with the details.
Not only was the cancelation devastating to the cast, crew, and franchise’s fans, but it sent warning bells ringing throughout Hollywood, bringing into question the future of any previously greenlit and hard-worked-on project. And with the future of the Ezra Miller-led The Flash in question, it may have put an end to Keaton’s Batman return (both films were his first since 1992’s Batman Returns), as the actor has reportedly been replaced with Ben Affleck in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, according to the publication.
When they followed up to confirm if we would ever see Keaton as Batman again, the actor’s response was, “I don't know…We'll see.” He described his time as Bruce Wayne as “great” and “fun,” but added he really has no idea what—if anything—will be next for his iteration of the character.
