Michael Caine Is Selling Off His Rolex and Other Mementos as He “Downsizes”
Michael Caine doesn’t need to work another day in his life, and apparently he’s finally realizing that. The 88-year-old film legend will be selling off some of his personal effects at an upcoming auction from Bonhams as he and his wife are “downsizing” in order to live at “a more leisurely pace,” per the London auction house.
Sir Michael Caine: The Personal Collection will be sold at Bonhams in London on March 2 and feature a wide-ranging assortment of personal accessories, movie memorabilia and art from the beloved actor, including a Rolex watch and a piece by artist Marc Chagall.
“It’s going to be quite a wrench to part with so many treasured parts of my life and career, but it’s the right time to be moving on,” Caine said in a statement. “I hope these mementoes will give their new owners as much pleasure as they have given us.”
The Rolex in question is an 18k gold Oysterquartz Day-Date ref. 19018, which Caine can be seen wearing in the movie Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, per watch blog Hodinkee. It’s expected to sell for anywhere from $11,000 to $16,000. As for the Chagall, the artwork is called Les amoureux dans l’arbre and expected to fetch the highest price of any single piece, between $41,000 and $68,000.
The rest of the sale includes film posters from movies like Alfie and Zulu, a director’s chair from Get Carter and a portrait of Caine by British artist Lincoln Townley. The proceeds from the latter lot will go to the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, a charity for which Bonhams says Michael Caine and his wife Shakira (no, not that one) have been “strong supporters.”
Also included in the sale? A pair of Caine’s imposing spectacles, which he could pull off like no other.
