Miami expects D'Eriq King to be ready for 2021 season after he tore right ACL in Cheez-It Bowl
Miami quarterback D’Eriq King tore his ACL in the Cheez-It Bowl on Tuesday.
The Hurricanes said Thursday that their star quarterback’s right knee injury was in fact a torn ACL. But the team said that King is expected to be ready for fall practice in August as he will have seven months to rehab before fall practice begins.
King’s knee buckled on a run in the second quarter during the loss to Oklahoma State and he had to be helped to the locker room before returning to the sideline with a large brace on his knee.
“We are obviously disappointed for D’Eriq but we know he is in great hands with our medical staff,” Miami coach Manny Diaz said in a statement. “D’Eriq is the leader of this football team and we know that he will approach his rehabilitation with the same tenacity that he has approached every facet of his game since he arrived on our campus. We can’t wait to see him back on the field leading our team in August.”

King announced two days before the Cheez-It Bowl that he would be returning to Miami for another season. He transferred to the Hurricanes from Houston ahead of the 2020 season as a graduate transfer with the expectation that he’d play just one season with the team. But King is coming back and taking advantage of a COVID-19 induced NCAA rule that granted every college athlete an extra year of eligibility.
King finished the season 210-of-328 passing for 2,683 yards and 23 TDs to just five interceptions. He also rushed for 538 yards and four touchdowns. With Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence undoubtedly off to the NFL in 2021, King will contend with North Carolina QB Sam Howell to be the preseason first team All-ACC quarterback.
