Mets say they're considering Tim Tebow for spot in 60-man player pool
The COVID-19 pandemic has wreaked havoc on baseball.
Tim Tebow’s MLB aspirations remain intact.
As teams prepare their rosters for training camps ahead of the 60-game season planned for late July, Tebow is a candidate to make the New York Mets’ player pool. Just ask general manager Brodie Van Wagenen.
“We do still have 10 spots that we haven’t made final determinations on, who we will be bringing,” Van Wagenen said on a video call with reporters on Monday, per Syracuse.com. “He was in camp with us early on in camp last spring. He was sent out to minor league camp a couple weeks into it.
“But he, like many of the other players that were in spring training for us, will be in consideration to bring back. But we haven’t made those final decisions.”
What’s a player pool?
The Mets have determined 50 of the 60 players who made the cut for their training-camp player pool. Players who make the cut will attend camp and be available to MLB teams throughout the season in lieu of functioning minor leagues. With 10 spots left, Tebow remains a consideration.
Does this mean that Tebow has a shot of showing up in a New York Mets uniform sometime this season? Not likely.
Tebow’s performance in minor leagues
The Mets have maintained the Heisman Trophy winner and NFL bust along with his ability to draw media and fan attention in their minor-league system since 2017.
During that time, he’s hit .223 with 18 home runs and 107 RBI over the course of 1,048 plate appearances. Most recently, he hit .163 with four home runs and 19 RBI in a 2019 campaign with the Mets’ AAA affiliate in Syracuse. He’s 32 years old.
None of this resembles anything close to a legitimate MLB prospect. But Tebow is good for business. So there’s no reason for Van Wagenen to close the door.
