Taylor Swift in custom Louis Vuitton
Fully embracing Anna Wintour’s advice to give grunge a try, Taylor Swift attended the Met Gala in a silver mini dress made of fabric reminiscent of a reptile’s skin. Made with a halter neckline and flare skirt, the piece also featured cutouts. Her lace-up ribbon heels added some girliness to an otherwise hard look, which was completed with a messy platinum-blonde bob and dark lip. (Photo: Getty Images)

Lupita Nyong’o in Calvin Klein
Sure, the foam green dress with cascading sequins is beautiful — but it’s Lupita Nyong’o’s hair, not unlike that of Marge from the Simpsons, that really made a statement. (Photo: Getty Images)

Madonna in Givenchy
Madonna, who really only showed up to the Met Gala for the bread sticks, chose a Givenchy ensemble fit for a dominatrix witch. She barely covered her breasts with stickies and lace and her entire behind was exposed for the world to see. (Photo: Getty Images)

Kerry Washington in Marc Jacobs
The Scandal actress, who announced she was pregnant with her second child on Monday, dressed, well, scandalously. In a lace gown with a thigh-high slit, she looked very vampy. She enhanced this even more with swiss dot sheer gloves and purple highlights in her curly hair. (Photo: Getty Images)

Kate Hudson in Atelier Versace
Taking the tech theme very seriously, Kate Hudson wore an Atelier Versace gown that looked like it was made out of scrap metal and assembled by a robot. (Photo: Getty Images)

Diane von Furstenberg in Diane von Furstenberg
Diane von Furstenberg accessorized her black- and-white splatter-paint gown with a sheer spotted shawl. The designer looked like she walked into her closet, pulled her favorite looks, and then walked through a butterfly sanctuary and took some of the bugs with her. (Photo: Getty Images)

Alicia Vikander in Louis Vuitton
While most formal events usually see mostly long dresses, Alicia Vikander broke from the crowd with a short hemline. She paired the mini, embellished with sequins and featuring a red leather bra, with some heavy metal booties. (Photo: Getty Images)

Selena Gomez in Louis Vuitton
Selena Gomez kept things casual in a black and white chiffon dress with a leather bustier on top. Dressed like she was going to a grunge luncheon with BFF Taylor Swift by her side, the singer opted for comfort in black patent boots with white laces and pulled her hair back into a high ponytail. Wearing a white ensemble inspired by both Marie Antoinette and Captain Hook, Sarah Jessica Parker paired her culottes with blue shoes from her very own brand (that reminds one of the iconic heels in the Sex and the City movie) and a cameo necklace. (Photo: Getty Images)

What does the future of fashion actually look like? Think of 2016′s Met Gala red carpet as a crystal ball with sartorial powers. The theme of the exhibition was “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology,” and attendees were asked to dress in Tech White Tie (the event is sponsored by Apple, after all). From a Marchesa dress designed with the help of an Intel supercomputer to Tory Burch’s innovative Swarovski crystals that change color, the designs certainly did not disappoint.
