Some Meow Mix Cat Food Is Being Recalled Due To Salmonella Fears For Pets And Humans
The J.M. Smucker Co. announced a voluntary limited recall of some Meow Mix brand cat food due to potential salmonella contamination. The concern is that pets may be at risk and that salmonella can infect humans when the product is handled by pet owners.
The recall includes 30-pound bags of Meow Mix Original Choice Dry Cat Food and the products were sold at Walmart retail stores across the midwest. Bags were sent to locations in Illinois, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Utah, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. Anyone who purchased the product from a Walmart store in those states is urged to dispose of it and not feed it to their cat.
With pet food recalls, it's always a concern that humans can be affected as well. In cats, salmonella symptoms can include vomiting and diarrhea, but will more likely include decreased appetite, fever, and excessive salivation. In humans, salmonella can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and fever. Cats can also infect their owners with salmonella even if they are not actively showing symptoms.
To find out if the Meow Mix in your home is part of the recall, check for UPC codes of 2927452099 and best by dates of September 14 and September 15 of 2022. As is true with all recalls, if you have any of the products in your possession, dispose of them immediately and be sure to wash your hands after handling the packaging to be safe. If your cat consumed the food or is experiencing symptoms, contact a vet immediately.
