Melisandre Could Potentially Join the ‘Game of Thrones’ Prequel Cast, But Would She? Carice van Houten Weighs In

If you’ve been eager for Game of Thrones’s upcoming prequel House of the Dragon to arrive, then we’re delighted to tell you there may be a familiar face included in the highly-anticipated series.

As Entertainment Tonight pointed out, Melisandre (Carice van Houten) could potentially fit into the plot of House of the Dragon. Since the new series takes place in Westeros about 300 years before the Game of Thrones storyline, it’s possible that she could return. Why? Well, even though van Houten only portrayed the Red Priestess for seven seasons of the hit HBO series, her mysterious character is hundreds of years old. So, it’s not too much of a stretch to think she was around and kicking during the Targaryen era.

The publication asked van Houten if she’s been approached to play the Red Woman again and if she would even like to. Her answer may surprise you.

“Well, it would really depend on the storyline,” she reasoned. “I would be interested if we could see a completely different side to her. It would have to be an interesting perspective that we haven’t seen before. Otherwise, I feel like I’ve closed it off in a natural way—which is also a good thing.”

The upcoming Game of Thrones spinoff centers on the storied rule of the Targaryen family and the civil war that engulfed their empire. Given the plot, there’s no clear entry point for Melisandre, but crazier things have happened in the George R.R. Martin-created universe.

Now give us a release date for House of the Dragon please, HBO.
